St. John Paul II Preschool
You might be wondering...what is Reggio Emilia? If you have heard of Montessori, Reggio has many similarities. In short Reggio Emilia is a child-centered, educational philosophy that emphasizes play, hands-on, project-based learning, and sees children as capable and curious learners. Our goal is to make our classrooms feel warm, welcoming and more like home than a stereotypical classroom. You might say we have more of a minimalist mindset. You will see comfy furniture, soft lighting, natural textures, home utensils, and fewer store bought toys and more repurposed items. A cozy classroom can help your littles feel more at ease, enhance focus, promote positive behavior, and allows our teachers to take creativity and critical thinking to new levels.
Research shows that spending time outside each day comes with large benefits. Creativity, mental and physical health, strong verbal and social skills, larger attention span and cognitive abilities are just a few of those benefits. JP II Preschool sits on 4 acres of beautiful land and we will spend lots of time outside exploring and enjoying God's world with your children. The goal is to spend half the time your child is in school - outside learning and playing. We have a mud kitchen as part of playground and each class will have a garden or growing center of teachers' choosing. No Promises your child will come home clean.
Your child will NOT be required to wear shoes while inside their home classroom. Barefoot walking provides crucial sensory input and stimulates the development of neural pathways and body awareness. In addition to the benefits, being shoeless can makes kids feel more comfortable, which in return makes play and learning come more naturally. Can't you just imagine young Jesus running around barefoot? Let's be more like him.
Your child's art projects will be focused on process versus product. We will not add to, take away, direct, or rearrange their work. Art invites children to experiement, make mistakes and find joy in the unexpected results! Each child's interpretations are unique and we want to embrace the way God made their creative processes and abilities.
We have screen FREE classrooms. Kids see adults with devices in their hands all the time. Our world is bombarded with stimuli from various sources every day, we strive to create an environment where devices are not the norm, but rather creativity starts from within. The only exceptions to this would be if the teachers are taking pictures or if we have special events that require technology.
*Monthly Chapel - songs, prayer and devotionals. Families welcome to attend.
*Twice Weekly Music Class - this is an extension to the classroom through movement, song, rhythm, and games.
*Weekly Cooking or Baking experiences.
*Onsite Library - children will have story time, and be able to check out books.
